Interiors and DIY guru Laura de Barra, author of new book Decor Galore says it’s all about making sure to clean out your detergent drawer.
Cork woman Laura, who shares lots of helpful home hacks on her Instagram and TikTok shared a video on how to clean it out safely to make your washing machine brand new again.
She said in her TikTok video: “You might be wondering why your dispenser drawer is hanging onto fabric softener and not using the full amount you put in every wash.”
She then shows how she pulls out the drawer from her own washing machine, urging people to be careful as old fabric softener is likely to spill out.
Laura added: “This can get quite dirty. There will quite often be mould up here, and you might find some powder.
“This can actually build up into a blockage, so you want to make sure to keep it free of mould and powder.”

The DIY star then explained that the drawers are divided into different sections for the different stages of the laundry cycle.
Laura then pointed out that the small holes on the underside of where the drawer goes are actually the spray holes.
She said: “The machine will select which spray holes it wants water to pour from to hit the required section of the drawer.
“It adds water to it and then flows down the back.
“It’s important to note here that if you are finding one section isn’t getting picked up fully during a cycle, it probably means the spray holes above that section are clogged.”
CLEANING TIPS
For cleaning the area, Laura first urged people to lay down a cloth or towel along the base to make sure no dirt or other bits end up down the hole which brings water into the drum of the machine.
And she then revealed that the secret item she keeps in her “appliance repair kit” is a simple dental brush.
She said: “These are fab because they are small enough to fit into the spray holes like this, and also the ones in your dishwasher, and the drain hole at the back of your fridge.
“And the bristles are soft enough to use against your gums, which means they’re not going to cause damage to the machine.”
Laura added: “If your machine is really bad and mouldy, an old toothbrush is stunning here.”
She then recommends using a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water to clean out the gunk, adding that it will “get rid of any mould, and it’ll unclog any limescale-filled spray holes.”

Laura’s TikTok video has amassed over 18,000 likes on the social media platform as well as 13,000 shares.
